Title says it all.... come here and tell us what your all time favourite books are!

Mine has to be Magician by Raymond E Feist as it was the first book which got me absolutely captivated by the fantasy worlds he created... but out of the series that sprung from Magician... it is the Empire Series which was the best read for me. Once I started it I just couldn't put it down. Awesome books... I would recommend them to anyone! cheers

I couldn't even get started on the list... I suppose that more than anything it would have to be Legend by David Gemmell. It was, so far as I remember, the first actual book I read. I think at that age, four, I had been burning through comics so fast that my mother decided they weren't worth the cost paid so she got me Legend. I still have that, battered and falling to bits, copy.

Hmmm ... All time favourites?
That would have to be Neil Gaiman's American Gods, only problem with that one is that the second time, it's a re-read...
Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy, hands down the finest in "hard" sci-fi I've ever come across (eat your heart out, Isaac Asimov!)
and Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, which is riveting, hilarious, massive and engrossing, all by turns.

Even managed to cover fantasy, sci-fi and period...

Ah. I love books. As you'll see by my choices, I haven't spent as much time in fantasy/sci-fi or other genres that lend themselves more readily to RPing as some of you probably have - though I have read my share of fantasy/sci-fi as I'm an avid reader.

I will probably continue to edit or add to my list, but as of now here are 4 gems you probably can't go wrong in reading if you haven't had a chance yet:

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin

Sheesh Ni, way to raise the bar :p

I suppose I can't really choose a single Sci-Fi that I find to be more enjoyable than any other, I have to agree that the Mars trilogy is exceptional. I referenced that as an example of a Hard SF and it is fairly awesome. At a stretch I'd have to say Starship Troopers was always my favourite, I'm big into military SF and that has always been one of the defining works of that entire sub-genre.

As far as period... War & Peace was among the first books I ever read, so I'd say that it would have a special place in my heart.

*I even liked the films Surprised

Whenever I'm writing in "My favourite books" section on social networking sites and the like (shh) I always have to mention Catch-22 and 1984. Cliched to have those as favourite books? Maybe, but they are pretty darn epic.

I've almost finished reading Watership Down for the first time in yearsss! I do love that book.

A wonderful little caper called Rosie is my Relative is the only book to actually cause me to laugh so hard I had tears running down my face and stitches, I had to pause reading to compose myself many times! I forget who it's by but I highly recommend it.

Also, Stephen King's Firestarter is wonderful, as is Ben Elton's Dead Famous and Chart Throb.

I'm aware of the lack of fantasy in that list =\
